Uncle Archie Roach is Australia’s beloved Aboriginal singer-songwriter with a voice and sensibility that is this country’s most important songline. His iconic songs carry the weight of suffering, pain and injustice, yet connects and offers glimpses of hope and freedom. His later songs – influenced by gospel and soul music – are about discovering and expressing strength.
In 2015, Uncle Archie was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to the arts as a singer, songwriter, activist and advocate on issues around community justice. During this year’s BIGSOUND keynote, broadcast journalist Namila Benson speaks with Uncle Archie about music and creativity; not only as an artist, but also as part of his organisation – The Archie Roach Foundation. The foundation combines arts and cultural practice to connect with – and support – mob in the youth justice system and in the creative arts industry.
Join us for an intimate and thought-provoking session, where Uncle Archie discusses the role of music beyond entertainment; as a powerful force for healing and empowerment across communities.
