Archie Roach is one of Australia’s most treasured performers. There are few Australian voices in the debate on social justice and Indigenous welfare that resonate as strongly as his. When Archie released his debut album Charcoal Lane over 25 years ago, his song ‘Took the Children Away’ shone a spotlight on the impact of the forcible removal of Indigenous children from their families and brought it to the attention of the global community, also garnering two ARIA Awards and most notably an international Human Rights Achievement Award (making him the first songwriter to do so).
His work has been recognised locally and internationally in both mainstream and Indigenous circles. He has collaborated with the finest musicians in the country, including Paul Kelly, A.B Original and Dan Sultan and has toured with the world’s most iconic artists including Bob Dylan, Tracy Chapman, Rodriguez, Patti Smith, Paul Simon and the late Leonard Cohen.
