From 2008 to 2016, James worked solely in the field of copyright law and policy, before taking the role of Director of Policy and Government Relations at Screen Producers Australia in late 2016.

Previously, he was a Senior Legal Officer at the Australian Copyright Council and before that, a Senior Legal Officer in the Copyright Law Section of the Australian Government Attorney-General's Department.
